How Google AI Overviews choose their sources
What Google has said about getting cited in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and what that means in practice.
Short answer
AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages in Google's search index. To be eligible, a page must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations needed. Beyond that, what helps a page rank helps it get cited: helpful, specific content, a clear answer to the question, and a page Google can crawl and render without trouble.
What are AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of some Google results, with links to the pages they draw on. Google launched them in the US in May 2024 and has since rolled them out to many more countries, India included.
AI Mode is a separate, chat-style mode of Google Search, launched in 2025, where people ask longer questions and follow-ups. Both are part of Google Search, and both link out to sources.
What does Google say you need?
Google's guidance for site owners on AI features is short. In summary:
- The page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet.
- There are no additional technical requirements and no special optimisations needed.
- The usual SEO basics apply: let Google crawl, link to important pages internally, give visitors a good experience, keep key content in text, and make structured data match what's on the page.
So AI Overviews aren't a separate system you game with tricks. They're built on Search.
How does Google pick which pages to cite?
Google hasn't published a formula. Here is what it has said, and what follows from it:
- Query fan-out. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics to build one response. A page can be cited for a sub-question even if it doesn't rank for the main query.
- A wider set of links. Google says these features can show a wider, more diverse set of helpful links than a classic results page.
- Links support the summary. Sources are shown alongside what the summary says, so a page that states a fact clearly and specifically is easier to use as support.
How do you make pages more likely to be cited?
- Cover the sub-questions. Map the questions around your topic, not just the main term, and answer each under its own heading.
- Lead with the answer. One or two sentences that would make sense if quoted on their own.
- Be specific. Numbers, names, dates, steps and conditions. Vague text gives a summary nothing to point to.
- Show who wrote it and why they know. Bylines, author pages and first-hand experience. Google's guide to helpful content asks who made a page, how and why.
- Keep it crawlable. Content in the HTML, sensible internal links, no stray
noindexornosnippet. - Keep it fresh. Update facts and dates when things change.
Can you stop Google using your content in AI Overviews?
Only with the controls that limit snippets. nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit what Google can show, including in AI features, and noindex removes a page from Search altogether.
The Google-Extended robots.txt token doesn't affect AI Overviews. It controls whether your content is used for some of Google's AI products outside Search, such as the Gemini apps, and for training models. For most businesses the real question is the opposite one: how to be cited more.
How do you track AI Overview visibility?
Search Console counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report, together with regular web results. That shows your overall Google visibility. To see which of your pages are cited for which questions, check your target searches directly or use a tracker that records AI Overview sources.

Do I need schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says no special markup is needed. Structured data still helps Google understand your pages, so keep it accurate and in line with what's on the page.
Do AI Overviews only cite the top-ranking pages?
No. Pages that rank well are more likely to be used, but because Google can run several related searches for one question, it may cite a page that ranks for a sub-question rather than the main one.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic?
For some searches, yes: if the summary answers the question fully, fewer people click. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality. Track your own numbers rather than relying on averages.
Are AI Overviews available in India?
Yes. Google has offered AI Overviews in India since 2024, and AI Mode since 2025.
