How to measure your visibility in AI search
Rankings are one number. AI visibility is three: whether you're named, whether you're cited, and whether anyone clicks.
Short answer
Measure AI search visibility on three levels. Presence: how often AI tools name your brand for a fixed set of buyer questions. Citations: how often they link to your pages as sources. Traffic: visits and leads from AI tools, which analytics shows through referrers such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Track the same questions on a regular schedule, in each AI tool your buyers use, and compare the trend.
Why can't you measure AI visibility like rankings?
A ranking is one position for one search, and it's fairly stable. AI answers are not:
- The same question can get a different answer each time it's asked.
- Answers change with wording, location, chat history and whether the tool searched the web.
- There's no list of positions, only who is mentioned, in what order, and how.
So you measure rates across many questions and repeated runs, not single positions.
What should you track?
| Metric | What it tells you | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Share of answers | The share of tracked questions where you're named | Prompt tracking |
| Citation rate | The share of answers that link to your site | Prompt tracking |
| Position in the answer | Whether you're named first or as an afterthought | Prompt tracking |
| Accuracy and tone | Whether what's said about you is right, and favourable | Reading the answers |
| Competitor share | Who gets named when you don't | Prompt tracking |
| AI referral traffic | Visits from AI tools | Analytics |
| AI-sourced leads | Enquiries that started in an AI tool | Your CRM and a "How did you hear about us?" field |
How do you set up prompt tracking?
- Write the questions. 30 to 50 questions buyers really ask, across the journey: "what is…", "best … for …", "X vs Y", "is X worth it". Use their words, not your keywords.
- Pick the tools. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, as they matter to your buyers.
- Run each question several times. Use fresh sessions, turn web search on where the tool offers it, and note the location you ran it from.
- Record the same fields every time. Named or not, position, what was said, which sources were cited, which competitors appeared.
- Keep the question set fixed. That's what makes month-to-month numbers comparable. Add new questions as a separate set.
For a small set, a spreadsheet and an afternoon will do. Paid tools automate it at scale. Whichever you use, don't change the method between reports.
How do you see AI traffic in analytics?
AI tools send visitors with a referrer you can see:
chatgpt.com. ChatGPT also tags many links withutm_source=chatgpt.com.perplexity.aigemini.google.comcopilot.microsoft.comclaude.ai
In Google Analytics 4, create a custom channel group with a channel called AI that matches those sources, and place it above Referral so the visits aren't counted twice. A source condition like this one works:
chatgpt\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai
Some AI visits arrive with no referrer and land in direct traffic, so treat the AI channel as a floor, not the full count.
What does Search Console show?
Google counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console's Performance report, together with the rest of web search. That gives you total Google visibility. To know whether you're cited in an AI Overview for a given question, check it directly or use a tracker that records AI Overview sources. Our guide to how AI Overviews choose sources covers what you can influence.
What can server logs tell you?
Your logs show which AI crawlers visit and what they read. Visits from agents that act for a user, such as ChatGPT-User or Perplexity-User, mean someone asked an AI tool a question and it opened your page to answer. More of those visits to a page is an early sign it's being used in answers.
How often should you report?
Run the tracking weekly or monthly, and report the trend monthly. One run is noise. Three months in the same direction is a signal. Weekly tracking and a single monthly report is how we run GEO for clients.

What is a good share of answers?
There's no universal benchmark. It depends on your category and how crowded it is. Compare yourself with named competitors on the same questions, and watch the change over time.
Can I track AI visibility for free?
Yes, by hand. A spreadsheet, a fixed list of 30 questions and a few hours a month gets you a usable baseline. Paid tools add scale, history and automation.
Why does AI traffic look so small in analytics?
Many AI answers satisfy the question without a click, and some AI visits arrive without a referrer and are counted as direct. Look at leads and branded searches alongside referral traffic.
Does a mention without a link still count?
Yes. It puts your name in front of a buyer while they're choosing, and many will search for you afterwards. Watch your branded search volume too.
